There are so many things to do in Hilo. It’s the Big Island of Hawaii’s most populous town with over 100,000 residents. Although the Kona side has more tourism there’s still plenty to do here for a few days. It’s on the windward (eastern) side of Hawaii island which means it’s quite wet. It also often has rougher water than the Kona side which is on the leeward (western) side. Hilo is a great place to shop and eat. There are quite a few unique spots there but to get adventure you often need to head out of town a ways. Here are some things to do in Hilo you and the family might enjoy. Some are more adventurous like the zipline big island and some are a bit easier requiring less adventurous spirit like the Onomea Bay trail.
Things to do in Hilo:
- Kaumana Caves
- Onomea Bay Trail
- Akaka Falls
- Zipline Big Island
These experiences are rated 1-10 with 1 being equivalent of going to a grocery store and 10 being you’re risking your life unnecessarily for a thrill. A level five would require some exertion but most people could easily handle it. A 1 is wheelchair accessible and a 10 requires specialty gear.

This is an easy thing to do because it’s paved most of the way and only requires a small elevation climb of a few hundred feet. It’s also a great thing to do with Kids in Hilo. The drive to get there is scenic and it’s a relatively quick stopover. A good place to visit before or after zipline Big Island or Akaka falls.

This is an extremely popular stop on the Hamakua side of Hilo. It’s the tallest waterfall in the united states and definitely worth a stop. The trail is easy but has many stairs and level changes. There are some beautiful gardens surrounding the trail. Check out the video for more detail. To read more about Akaka falls check out the blog.
